Disclaimer

The MENA Human Rights Observatory (“the Observatory”, “we”, “us”) is an independent, non-partisan research initiative. This Disclaimer explains the principles that govern our editorial and research work and the limits within which our content should be understood. It applies to all material published on this website, including articles, country reports, factsheets, the cases database, data visualisations, and social-media posts.

1. Independence and No Political Affiliation

The Observatory is not affiliated with, funded by, or acting on behalf of any government, political party, religious body, armed group, or commercial organisation. The views expressed in our publications are our own and do not represent the official position of any state, institution, or partner. Conversely, the appearance of a third-party source, logo, or citation on our website does not imply any endorsement of that source’s positions by the Observatory.

We do not accept funding or instructions that are conditional on producing a particular conclusion, and we are transparent about our sources of support.

2. Fact-Oriented and Source-Based Content

Our work aims to be fact-oriented, source-based, and methodologically transparent. Where we present findings, we seek to base them on verifiable documents, official records, court decisions, and credible field or media reporting. Where a matter is contested, we try to present the relevant positions fairly and to distinguish clearly between verified facts, allegations, and our own analysis.

Nonetheless, human-rights research is often constrained by limited access, incomplete records, and conflicting accounts. Our content may therefore contain errors, may become outdated, or may reflect information that was the best available at the time of publication but has since changed. We correct material errors when they come to our attention.

3. Not Legal, Medical, or Professional Advice

Nothing on this website constitutes legal, medical, psychological, financial, or other professional advice. Country profiles, legal-framework summaries, and case entries are provided for information and research purposes only. If you need advice about a specific situation, please consult a qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction.

4. Protection of Individuals

We are mindful that our reporting concerns real people who may be at risk. We avoid publishing information that could endanger victims, witnesses, sources, or their families. Names, locations, and other identifying details may be withheld, abbreviated, or altered where necessary for their protection. Case entries are based on documented reports and do not constitute a legal finding of guilt or responsibility.

5. External Content and Links

Links to external websites and documents are provided for reference. We do not control those resources and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability, or privacy practices. A link does not imply endorsement of the linked material.

6. Findings Are Not Legal Determinations

Terms such as “victim”, “detained”, “torture”, or “disappearance” are used in accordance with the definitions of the cited sources and applicable international standards. Their use in our content reflects the assessments of those sources and does not constitute a judicial determination by the Observatory. Responsibility for any legal characterisation rests with the competent courts and mechanisms.

7. No Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Observatory accepts no liability for any loss or damage arising from reliance on the content of this website. Our full terms are set out in our Terms of Use, and our handling of personal data is described in our Privacy Policy.

8. Reporting an Error or Concern

If you believe that content on this website is inaccurate, misleading, or unfairly harmful, please contact us at [email protected] with as much detail as possible. We review such reports and will correct or clarify content where warranted.
